Cost and coverage
There are two bills and they behave differently. The program covers the assessment, the prescribing decision and the reviews. The medication is dispensed by a pharmacy and priced by the manufacturer. Mixing them up is why quoted numbers vary so wildly.
Two bills
The program fee pays for clinician time: the assessment, the prescribing decision, the dose schedule and the reviews that follow. It does not change much month to month.
The medication is a separate transaction with a pharmacy, and its price moves with the dose you are on. Because GLP-1 doses step up over the first months, the medication bill usually rises before it settles. Anyone quoting a single flat figure for both is hiding one of them.
Public health insurance does not currently cover GLP-1 medication prescribed for weight management. Private and workplace plans sometimes do, and that is worth establishing before you start rather than three months in. The detail sits in Program cost, Medication cost and Insurance and coverage.
Before you commit
Ask what it covers and what it does not. Consultations, reviews and messaging between appointments are the parts that differ between clinics.
Prices differ by molecule, by brand and by dose. Ask for the price at the starting dose and at the likely maintenance dose, not just the first one.
Call the number on your card and ask specifically about GLP-1 for weight management. Ask whether prior authorisation is required and what documentation they want.
Weight management is long term. A monthly figure is easier to compare when you multiply it out, including the months at a higher dose.

What is included, what a pharmacy charges, and what to ask your insurer.
They gave me the exact wording to use with my insurer. Prior authorisation came back approved in eleven days, which I am told is fast.
Nobody had explained that the pharmacy bill would climb as the dose went up. Knowing that in advance changed how I budgeted for it.
Cheaper options exist. What I got here was a written breakdown of what the fee covered, which the cheaper ones would not give me.
Told me straight that my workplace plan excluded weight-management drugs entirely. Saved me applying for something that was never going to be approved.
