Eating well

Nutrition on a GLP-1: eating well on less

When appetite falls this sharply, the problem stops being how to eat less and becomes how to get enough of what matters into a much smaller intake. Protein first, fluids throughout, and fewer large fatty meals.

  • Protein first, every meal
  • Fluids sipped through the day
  • Fat and volume drive nausea

The shift

What changes about eating on a GLP-1

Before treatment, eating well usually means eating less. On a GLP-1 the intake drops on its own, so the question inverts: with perhaps half the food you used to manage, what has to be in it.

Protein is the answer, because muscle is what you lose alongside fat when intake falls quickly, and protein is the main thing that limits that. Vegetables and fibre come next, largely for constipation.

The remainder is whatever you enjoy. Nobody sustains a plan built entirely on things they do not want to eat, particularly when appetite is already low. Protein and muscle loss covers the next part, alongside Nausea and digestion and Personalized plan.

Day to day

Practical nutrition habits that work

  1. Protein at every meal

Eggs, fish, poultry, dairy, beans or a shake. Because portions are small, protein needs to lead rather than be the thing you run out of room for.

  2. Four small meals

Spreading intake keeps both nausea and total intake manageable in a way three normal meals no longer does.

  3. Sip constantly

Thirst signals drop along with hunger. Dehydration is behind a great deal of the fatigue and headache people blame on the drug.

  4. Fibre for the obvious reason

Constipation is common, under-reported and largely preventable. Vegetables, fruit and whole grains do most of the work.

What to limit

The foods that make it harder

Fatty and fried food slows gastric emptying further, which is already slowed. Large portions do the same thing by volume. Together they account for most of the nausea people experience after week one.

Alcohol is worth mentioning separately: tolerance often changes, it adds intake without nutrition, and on a very small appetite it can displace food you actually needed. There is more in Common side effects, Exercise and activity and What to expect.

Common questions

Nutrition on a GLP-1: questions

Protein targets, hydration, supplements and what to avoid.

Protein first at every meal, then vegetables and fibre, then whatever else fits. Because total intake is much smaller, the order matters more than it used to.
More than most people manage on a very small appetite. A specific target should be set for your weight and situation rather than taken from a general article, which is part of what the plan covers.
Usually intake that has dropped faster than you realised, dehydration, or both. Thirst falls along with appetite, so fluids need to be deliberate rather than driven by thirst.
Sometimes, particularly where intake is very low or a food group has dropped out. It should follow from what you are actually eating rather than being added by default.
Tolerance often changes and it displaces food you may have needed on a small appetite. It is worth raising specifically rather than assuming nothing has changed.

Given an actual number rather than told to eat more protein. That made it something I could follow.

I was not thirsty so I was not drinking. Fixing that fixed the headaches I had blamed on the medication.

Generic advice about eating less is the wrong problem now. What fits into a much smaller intake is the right one.
