Lean mass
Some of what you lose will be muscle. That is true of every method of losing weight, and it matters more here because the intake drop is larger and faster. Protein and resistance training are what limit it.
Why it happens
When intake falls below what the body needs, it draws on both fat and lean tissue. Nothing about a GLP-1 changes that. What is different is the size and speed of the intake drop, which raises the stakes.
Losing lean mass matters for two reasons: strength and function in the obvious sense, and resting metabolic rate, which makes holding the weight off harder afterwards.
This is one of the more legitimate criticisms of the medication used on its own, and it is entirely addressable if it is planned for rather than discovered later. Nutrition on a GLP-1 covers the next part, alongside Exercise and activity and Weight loss timeline.
What helps
On a small appetite, whatever you eat first is what you actually finish. Put protein there rather than hoping there is room later.
Weights, bands or bodyweight. This is the signal that tells the body to keep the muscle it has while losing fat.
Faster loss costs more lean mass. A steady rate is not just easier, it protects more of what you want to keep.
Strength, waist and how clothes fit tell you about composition. The scale alone cannot distinguish fat from muscle.
How much
A meaningful protein target on a much smaller appetite is harder than it sounds, and it is the main reason shakes and dairy end up in most plans: they deliver protein without volume.
The number should be set for your weight and your situation. A figure lifted from a general article is usually either unreachable on your appetite or too low to do anything useful. There is more in Personalized plan, Physician-supervised care and Weight loss for men.

Common questions
How much you lose, whether it can be prevented, and what to do.
Started resistance work in month one on their advice. Lost the weight and did not lose the strength with it.
Could not eat enough protein as food. Shakes solved a problem I did not know I had.
Explained that faster loss would cost me more muscle. Made the slower pace much easier to accept.
Bands at home twice a week rather than a gym membership I would never use.

Next step
Protein target and a simple resistance routine, set at the beginning. Far easier than trying to recover lean mass later.
