Wegovy explained

Wegovy in Orlando: what the semaglutide licence actually covers

Same active ingredient as Ozempic, licensed differently. Novo Nordisk sells this one at doses cleared for weight rather than for blood sugar, which is why two names exist for one drug and why a plan may cover one of them and refuse the other.

  • Wegovy contains semaglutide
  • Approved for weight management
  • Prescription-only, after assessment

Molecule first

What Wegovy contains, and why that matters

The active ingredient is semaglutide, the same GLP-1 molecule found in Ozempic. What differs is the approved indication and the dose range: Wegovy is licensed for weight management and titrates to higher doses than the diabetes product.

That is the whole of the difference, and it is why "Ozempic versus Wegovy" is a less useful question than it looks. The more useful question is which product is licensed for what you are treating, and which one you can obtain. See Semaglutide, Ozempic and Dosing and titration for the rest of it.

How it is prescribed

How Wegovy is prescribed and titrated

  1. Assessment

BMI, conditions, family history and current medications. The thresholds are BMI 30, or 27 with a documented weight-related condition.

  2. Starting dose

The lowest dose for the first four weeks. This is about tolerance rather than effect and it is not skipped.

  3. Monthly steps

Increases at roughly four-week intervals, each conditional on the last being tolerated.

  4. Maintenance

The dose that holds the effect and that you can stay on, which is not always the top of the range.

Approval

What approved for weight management actually means

Approval means a regulator reviewed trial evidence for that specific use and licensed the product for it at those doses. It is not a marketing claim and it is not the same as a product being commonly used off-label.

It also affects coverage. Drug plans generally look at the approved indication when deciding whether to fund something, which is one reason the distinction between the two semaglutide brands is worth understanding before you apply. Common questions

Wegovy questions, answered

What is in it, how it differs from Ozempic, and what it costs.

Both contain semaglutide. Wegovy is approved for weight management and titrates to higher doses; Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes. Same molecule, different licensed use and dose range.
No. Public health insurance does not fund GLP-1 medication prescribed for weight management. Some private and workplace plans do, usually with prior authorisation.
Appetite usually changes within the first few weeks. Meaningful weight change generally takes a couple of months, because the opening doses are about tolerance.
Digestive: nausea, fullness, constipation and reflux, generally worst in the days after a dose increase and easing as the body adjusts.
No. It is prescription-only and requires an assessment by a licensed clinician. Anyone offering it without one is not doing this properly.

I had spent months confused about which of the two names I needed. Ten minutes here sorted it out and the prescription matched what I was actually treating.

Prior authorisation was refused first time. They helped with the appeal wording and the second attempt went through.

Four weeks at each step, no exceptions. Slower than I wanted at the time and clearly correct in hindsight.

The nausea in week five was real but it passed in about ten days exactly as described.

Ask whether Wegovy is appropriate for you

Which semaglutide product is right depends on what is being treated and what your plan will fund. Both are settled at the consultation.
