Compounded medication

Compounded vs brand semaglutide, compared

Compounded versions are cheaper, and that is the whole appeal. The difference is regulatory: an approved product has been through trials and manufacturing oversight as a finished medicine, and a compounded preparation has not.

  • Cheaper, and differently regulated
  • Not individually trial-tested
  • Ask where it is made

The difference

How compounded and brand products differ

An approved brand-name product has been tested as a finished medicine: the molecule, the concentration, the delivery device and the manufacturing process all sit inside one approval, and every batch is made to that standard.

A compounded preparation is made by a pharmacy. Reputable compounders test and document what they produce, but the finished preparation itself has not gone through the approval process, so consistency depends on the individual pharmacy.

That is a real difference and it is also frequently overstated in both directions. It is worth understanding rather than being frightened of or waved away. Semaglutide treatment, Medication cost and Program cost go further into it.

Questions to ask about compounded products

  1. Which pharmacy makes it

A named, licensed compounding pharmacy you can look up. A provider unwilling to tell you is answering the question.

  2. What testing is done

Potency and sterility testing on each batch, with documentation available. Ask to see it rather than take it on trust.

  3. What exactly is in it

Semaglutide alone, or combined with something else. Additives change the risk picture and should be disclosed plainly.

  4. Who supervises you

The product matters less than whether a clinician is reviewing your dose, your side effects and your history.

Cost

Why compounded options cost less

The price gap is large and it is the reason the market exists. Brand-name pricing reflects development, trials and manufacturing at scale under approval; a compounded preparation carries none of that.

Whether the saving is worth the difference in oversight is a decision for you, made with the actual facts rather than either the cheapest marketing or the loudest warning. More on that in Insurance and coverage, Physician-supervised care and Is it covered.

Common questions

Compounded semaglutide: questions

Safety, legality, cost and what to ask before agreeing.

The active molecule is the same, but the finished preparation has not been through the approval process that a brand-name product has. Consistency therefore depends on the compounding pharmacy rather than on a single approved manufacturing standard.
A reputable licensed compounder that tests each batch is a very different proposition from an unnamed source. The question is not compounded or not, it is which pharmacy and what testing.
It does not carry the development, trial and approved-manufacturing costs that brand-name pricing reflects. That is the entire source of the price gap.
Which licensed pharmacy prepares it, what potency and sterility testing is done, exactly what is in it, and who is clinically supervising your treatment.
Often, with clinical guidance, since dose equivalence and timing need handling. It is not something to do on your own between suppliers.
